Elaborating Academic Discussion week 2

ELABORATING IN AN ACADEMIC DISCUSSION
·      In a discussion, you bring your ideas and opinions to the table, just as you would take a cake to a potluck. You want to fill in all the detail and give your listener enough information to understand what you mean and to have plenty to respond to.
Insufficiently elaborated responses can be:
1.      To short
2.      Repetitive

Two job in discussion:
1.      Elaborate on your own responses. It will make:
·         Fact, something the real
·         Anecdote, like a stories
·         Analogies, which compares between two things
·         Hypothetical, are imagined examples
2.      Elaborate on their answer you my ask with:
·         What do you mean by …
·         I’d love to hear more about …
·         Can you be more specific with …
And the last thing is, don’t elaborate to much.

ELABORATING BY USING AN EXAMPLE

There are four kinds of example, those are:
1.      Fact and statistic
You will get the informations about this from class lectures, research, world news, or surveys and studies. This is include the true information and it is very useful to give example.
One thing for sure, you may not write the information that is not accurate means that you don’t have to guess the member and should be relevance.

2.      Anecdote
Short report that explain your idea. It is the way to make your idea be more understandable. Anecdote included a story to make the listener connects with your idea. It can be story of the speaker or the other one. The point it helps anyone to understand the explanation easily.

3.       Analogy
An analogy is a kind of comparison, but it isn’t like comparing apples and oranges. It’s little more involved in that. In this analogy, we understand that the company is without direction and perhaps in trouble.

4.      Hypothetical
As kind of supporting example you can use in your discussion. These are what if scenarios. This example hasn’t happened, but it gets everybody thinking about what could happen, and that’s what a good hypothetical example does. There are many kinds of examples that you can use to support and clarify your ideas in a discussion.

·         Six different levels of thinking

The lower levels include:
1.      Knowledge
2.      Comprehension
3.      Application

The higher levels include:
4.      Analysis
